Do any of these common healthcare scenarios sound familiar?

  • You are visiting your doctor and he orders a blood panel for further testing.
  • Your son has injured his ankle and you want to get to the doctor for an exam, but you aren't sure what the costs will be.
  • At the doctor's office, they want to do an X-ray.

In each of these scenarios, you have access to a potentially cost-saving solution for a quality service that your doctor's office will accept.  It only takes a moment to review your options through your Member Portal, where the links and/or phone numbers to each of these services are available.  Your Association ID card may have these details as well.

We know that you are cost-conscious consumers who want the best quality for the best value, so we have researched and put together benefits that help you take control of your healthcare costs.

With a Health Depot membership, you are in the driver's seat.

Maximize Your Healthcare Savings

Many Health Depot memberships include Point Health, our patient advocacy partner, which can provide personalized, expert service to navigate complex and expensive healthcare decisions. Get cost estimates for various outpatient procedures so you know what to expect. Advisors are happy to help schedule primary care and specialist visits, labs, imaging, flu shots and more.

After receiving your medical bill, Point Health can help negotiate with providers on your behalf to help reduce the amount. They can even pre-negotiate ahead of a medical procedure to ensure you are getting the best rate.  Just provide a written estimate stating the bill is or will likely total over $2,000 and Advisors will work on your behalf.

The Importance of Lung Cancer Screenings

Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer death in the United States for both men and women. More men die of lung cancer than the next two most deadly types of cancer for men (prostate and colorectal) combined, and more women die of lung cancer (59,910) than breast cancer (43,170).¹

Screening is used to detect lung cancer early, when it is more likely to be curable. If lung cancer is caught before it spreads, the likelihood of surviving 5 years or more improves to 63 percent.²

Get involved in the fight against lung cancer by participating in events found near to you by searching here.

Energize Your Healthy Habits

Spring cleaning is not just for your house. As the weather continues to warm up, use this time to build new health habits for you and your family.

Clean Out the Clutter

  • While creating a peace of mind with cleaning you also give your body the opportunity to keep moving by digging in your closets, washing windows, getting down to clean baseboards, and walking around with the vacuum, just make sure to turn it on first.
  • Sounds like plain old labor, but these movements can also be healthy and prevent yourself from becoming stagnant. Physical activity is not strictly defined by going to the gym or running laps. General house cleaning can burn up to 136 calories per hour. Moving large furniture and boxes can increase calories burned to 340 per hour, according to website Calorie Lab.

Keep Your Food Supply Updated and Healthy

  • With many great spring vegetables coming into season and restock of pantry items after a long winter gives you the chance to reset your meal planning or swap out some healthier options.
  • Don't let your cupboards sabotage your meal prep. Look for low or reduced salt items and avoid added sugars in foods and beverages. Even bring in some new spices to the mix instead of reaching to refill the salt shaker.

Go Outside

  • You may be eager to get out on your patio or begin preparing your lawn and garden. These activities not only allow for a pleasant outdoor space, but also a "zone of peace". There are many hidden forms of exercise in preparing outdoor spaces too. For example, you may lift patio or decorative stones back into place, carry pots, push wheelbarrow, plant seeds, bring out the grill and patio furniture, and do lawn maintenance.
  • Getting back to nature can help you connect with yourself and improve your overall sense of well-being,” said Teresa Kay-Aba Kennedy, a holistic health counselor, a Harvard Business School-trained strategist and an American Heart Association spokeswoman.

Look Ahead

  • Continue to plan physical activity in and outdoors. By keeping a plan for physical activity your body will be more prepared for the upcoming spring and summer vacations. Brisk walks, dancing, or taking stairs instead of elevators will keep you on your toes and fit for long vacation days and also help in meeting the recommended 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days a week.
  • Why not make more of your vacations and get a jump start on planning by walking to your local library for information.

Boost Your Immune System

  • Drinking more water – It is recommended that each person should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water every day. If meeting this goal is difficult for you, drinking decaffeinated hot tea can count as part of your water intake.
  • Managing your stress – Being stressed daily can overwork your immune system and can limit your ability to remain healthy. Prioritizing self-care can help reduce stress. Whenever you’re feeling overwhelmed, try going for a walk, reading a book, or doing a hobby you enjoy.
  • Sleeping – Sleep is a natural immunity booster. When you don’t get enough rest, your body’s natural immune cells degrees causing the inflammation cells to rise. Getting the recommended seven to eight hours can help strengthen your body’s immune system.

Staying Home and Staying Healthy

Right now, a majority of the country has been asked to stay home and help flatten the curve of the COVID-19 pandemic. As tempting as it is to spend your days binge-watching Netflix and eating frozen pizza, this can contribute to poor nutrition, health and an overall feeling of un-wellness. Here is a guide for navigating the new world of social distancing.

Nutrition

Avoid panic buying and make a plan to stock up on healthy options:

  • Buy fresh produce, cut them up and freeze them to use for months to come
  • Find canned goods with low saturated fats, salt and added sugars
  • Citrus fruits, nuts, berries, fish, whole grains, garlic are good immune boosters

Fitness

With gyms closed, it is more challenging to keep moving. In addition to walking around your neighborhood or local trails, here are some ideas that will get your heart pumping:

  • American Hearth Association Free Live and Recorded Workouts
  • Spark People Short Videos
  • Workout While Watching TV

Sleep and Stress

Getting enough sleep is critical to every other aspect of your health. With a lot of unknowns around the pandemic, stress and lack of sleep may be at an all time high.  Here are some ideas for management:

  • Yoga and mediation can help manage stress
  • Turn off the social media to avoid over-exposure to chaos and news
  • Use Facetime and video chats to connect with others to help feel not quite so alone
  • Retreat to a specific area in your home that is free of technology and has calming items like blankets, scented candles and plants

Cleaning

Maintaining clean surfaces can help to fight against viruses and can help you feel more organized.

  • Use household cleaners that fight viruses
  • Wash towels frequently
  • De-clutter small spaces to feel larger and more comfortable

Healthcare

This is not the time for non-essential medical appointments, as this will create potential exposure to the virus.

  • Use telemedicine as much as possible
  • Seek care if you have pressing medical need, but call the doctor's office before arriving
  • Reschedule annual physicals and dental cleanings

The Importance of Breast Cancer Screenings

Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October is most well known as a time when people all over the world support those who have fought or are fighting breast cancer, as well as educate others about the warning signs and treatment options for breast cancer. But it is important to stay aware of the threat of breast cancer all year round.

Doctors agree that breast cancer screenings help to save thousands of lives every year, due to their earlier detection of breast cancer. These screenings can detect cancer before it spreads to another part of the body and present noticeable symptoms. Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk cancer will spread to other parts of the body, so it’s important to have breast screenings. While both men and women can develop breast cancer, the risk is over 100 times greater in women than in men. For women over the age of 55, the risk increases substantially.

Get involved in the fight against breast cancer by participating in events like Relay for Life, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, and Rugged Maniac.

For more information regarding breast cancer - risks, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and more - visit www.cancer.org.

Move More and Make it Count

April has been designated as Move More Month, which is a great time to commit to being more physically active. The American Heart Association provides inspirational tips and resources designed to inspire a healthier lifestyle and create lasting changes through easy steps that you can begin today.

Simple Approach

Eat smart. Add color. Move more. Be well.

  • Add more colorful fruits and veggies to your diet
  • Make time for more physical activity
  • Create an overall healthier lifestyle with sleep habits, mindfulness, stress management, mental health and more

At Work

Take advantage of any opportunity to sit less and move more during your work day.  Every minute you move adds up, so make it count!

  • Take the stairs when possible
  • Stand up and do some basic strength exercises - squats, desk push-ups, wall sits and calf raises
  • Walk to a nearby restaurant instead of driving or ordering in
  • Ask a coworker to be your "work out at work" partner to help you stay accountable and motivated

Outdoors

You don't have to invest in a gym membership to get fit.  Plus, being active outdoors can make exercise more fun! Adults should strive for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, and kids should aim for at least 60 minutes per day.

  • Family outings with physical activity can help get you all up and moving
  • Explore your neighborhood on foot or bicycle
  • Try to walk to nearby destinations like school, the grocery store or coffee shop
  • Work on your sports skills - toss the football, shoot some hoops, or play catch

At Home

Set a good example for the kids by finding ways to be more active around the house.  It may even help you stay on top of your housework!  Your goal should be to sit less, move more and add intensity.

  • Clearing the table, walking the dog, washing the car, taking the trash out, folding laundry, vacuuming and unloading the dishwasher can help get you and your family off the couch
  • Take a timeout on screens after dinner by taking a walk, riding your bikes, practicing a sport or playing games
  • Stand up and walk around during a phone call
  • Have a family dance party! Clear some space and get some music going to re-energize your household

On Your Own

Every time you stand up and do something, you're taking a step in the right direction. Keep your eye on the goal of moving more!

  • Go for a walk to shake off boredom
  • Join a recreational sports team
  • Try lessons in a new activity like dance, karate or archery
  • Get active for a good cause like 5Ks or Fun Runs aimed at fundraising for important charities

If you are looking for some daily challenges to keep things interesting, check the American Heart Association for ideas.  You can also follow Healthy for Good on Facebook and Twitter for a whole month of tips and tricks on how to move more and make it count!

Winter Safety Tips

Winter is never a surprise, but it's easy to let the cold temperatures sneak up on us.  Be sure to stay healthy and safe by planning ahead.

Prepare Your Home

Staying cozy in a warm house is no guarantee of safety.  Be sure to review the following in your home:

  • Winterize your home with weather stripping, insulating water lines on exterior walls, repair any roof leaks and clean out your gutters.
  • Check your heating system and fireplaces. Have a safe alternate heating source available.
  • Install and test batteries on smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors.

Equip Your Car

Keep your car running smoothly in cold weather with these preparations:

  • Service your radiator and maintain antifreeze level.
  • Check your tire treads and add snow tires if needed.
  • Keep a full gas tank.
  • Use a winterized windshield wiper formula.
  • Store a winter emergency kit in your car with items like a portable cell phone charger, blankets, food and water, booster cables, flares, maps, flashlight and first aid kit.

Expect the Unexpected

Weather-related emergencies are always possible, including power outages.

  • Stock shelf-safe food and bottled water.
  • Ensure your cell phone is always charged.
  • Keep an eye on the weather forecast, especially before travel.
  • Store an up-to-date emergency kit with battery-operated devices like flashlights, radios and lamps; a first aid kit and baby items.
  • Protect your family from carbon monoxide and keep grills, camp stoves and generators out of the house, basement and garage.

Make sure you check on family and neighbors who are at risk from cold weather hazards. If you have pets, bring them inside.  Stay ahead of the cold weather hazards of winter by following these safety tips.

Staying Active During Winter Months

It is so tempting to snuggle on the couch and watch Netflix during the cold months, but exercising in cooler weather does have some advantages:

No heat and humidity- The brisk temperatures can help you feel invigorated and move more quickly during a workout.

Workout longer- When you aren't drained from hot temps, you might have more stamina and in turn, burn more calories

Get some sun - Sunlight has been proven to improve your mood and boost vitamin D levels in your body.

Boost your immunity- With just a few minutes of exercise a day, you can prevent simple bacterial and viral infections, according to the CDC.

Ideas for outdoor activities:

  • Brisk walking or hiking
  • Jogging
  • Raking leaves
  • Shoveling snow
  • Ice skating
  • Sledding
  • Skiing
  • Snowshoeing

Eating Healthy on a Budget

eating-healthyMany of us are working hard and sticking to our New Year’s resolutions, whether that means going to the gym more, taking time to relax or meditate, or eating healthier. Often, we want to eat more nutritious and tasty meals, but don’t want to pay the higher prices associated with healthier diets. Though eating better can be expensive, it doesn’t have to be! And the benefits like increased productivity, weight loss, and stress reduction are well-worth the investment. Here are a few tips to eat healthy while sticking to a budget:

Buy and Freeze In-Season Produce- Buying produce out of season can be a stretch on the wallet, but if you stock up while it’s in season, you can freeze what you don’t eat for use in meals later in the year.

Bargain Hunting- The next time you go to the store, make sure you take a minute to see what’s on sale and plan your meals accordingly. Take advantage of coupons, savings cards, and other deals. You will be surprised at how far you can stretch your dollars when you take the time to look around.

Try Cheaper Cuts of Meat- While they may sound less appetizing, try cuts like bone-in chicken breasts or tougher cuts of red meat. If you throw them in the crock-pot, they can still turn out flavorful and tender.

Bulk Up with Beans and Whole Grains- Grains like brown rice and quinoa are better for you than processed grains, along with black beans, are a great way to add some bulk to your meals that will fill you up. Ethnic cuisines, like Indian and Mexican dishes, are a great way to utilize healthy grains and change up your meals.

Eating healthier doesn’t have to be harder! Simply take a few minutes to shop carefully and plan your meals accordingly. You’ll be surprised at how much you and your family enjoy it.

Dental Resources for You

More than 100 million Americans neglect to see a dentist each year, even though the American Dental Association recommends one to two visits a year to help spot dental health problems early on when treatment is simpler and more affordable. Regular check-ups can also prevent many problems from developing in the first place. And a visit to the dentist can also detect some diseases and medical conditions through your oral healthcare.

Many Health Depot memberships offer a Cigna health care discount, so members and their dependents can save 15% to 50% by using the Cigna Dental Network of over 110,000 providers.

For insured Dental coverage, members can add the HD Dental+Vision plan to their membership for benefits through United Concordia’s dental network.  Visit the HD Dental+Vision page for more details or contact Member Services at (855) 351-7535 for more information.

Your Summer Health Check List

While the kids are out of school and the doctor’s offices slow down – this is the perfect time to squeeze in your health to-do’s before the next school year starts.

  • Annual Doctor Visit – this is a great time for a well-check visit as germ exposure in the waiting room goes down significantly in the warmer months. Regular health exams and tests help to identify problems before they start.
  • Dentist Check Up – The American Dental Association recommends a visit every six months where your overall oral health will be examined, in addition to cleaning your teeth of plaque and tartar. Your oral health often provides early indicators of other issues like diabetes, oral cancer and vitamin deficiencies.
  • Eye Doctor – It is recommended for children to get regular eye tests every 1 to 2 years to monitor potential changes in vision. Increased use of digital devices has created an unprecedented increase in myopia or nearsightedness.

Don’t forget about basic health safety tips for the summer as well:

  • Hydrate – the higher temps can stress anyone’s body, so be sure to stay ultra-hydrated and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned places to avoid heat stroke or getting overheated.
  • Pay Attention Around Water – never leave kids unattended and don’t swim too soon after eating.
  • Picnic Safety – summer barbecues can be unpleasant if your mayonnaise or salad with mayonnaise sits out in the sun. Don’t forget about making sure meats are cooked thoroughly as well.
  • Itch Prevention – stay aware when around bees or wasps, as allergic reactions can become deadly. Long sleeves and/or bug spray can help prevent mosquito, tick and chigger bites.
  • Sun Burns – sunscreen in the summer is a must. Add a hat with a brim to help keep your face out of the sun.

Fruits & Veggies – More Matters

September will kick off Fruits & Veggies - More Matters Month and also begins the season of bountiful harvest, where a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables are ripe for filling our dinner tables.

In addition to adding color and texture to a meal, fruits and veggies may help to reduce the risk of diseases, including heart disease and some cancers.  Eating healthy can also help prevent obesity and high blood pressure.  Rich with vitamins and minerals, fruits and veggies can help you feel healthy and have more energy.

However, fewer than 1 in 4 adults eat the recommended amount of fruits every day and fewer than 1 in 7 adults eat the recommended amount of daily vegetables.

The latest Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend filling half your plate with fruits and veggies at every eating occasion, including snacks.  If this sounds challenging, just remember that all forms - fresh, frozen, canned, dried and 100% juice count toward your daily intake.

Eating a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and fruits can help you:

  • Lower your risk for heart disease and some types of cancer
  • Maintain or reach a healthy weight
  • Keep your body strong and active

Here are some ideas to help you and your family fit more fruits and vegetables into your day:

  • Keep a bowl of fruit handy where the whole family can see it.
  • Cut up fruits and veggies ahead of time, so they're ready for quick, healthy snacks.
  • Challenge your family to try a new veggie or fruit every week.
